Some New Over-the-Counter Insecticides- Jul 23, 2009
Unfortunately, most of the manufacturers of homeowner-use products rarely announce their products to state extension entomologists. They've read the reports that we are usually at the bottom of the list of technical resources used by the average DIY (do-it-yourselfer), so they don't take the time to inform us of new products!
In any case, I've discovered that there are two very useful products now on the market! The first two are Maxide products (look up maxide.com on the Internet). The Maxide Grub Killer contains thiamethoxam (the neonic in Syngenta's Meridian) and Maxide Insect Killer contains thiamethoxam plus lambda-cyhalothrin (Syngenta's pyrethroid, Scimitar). Thiamethoxam is running at the same efficacy as imidacloprid (in Bayer's and the Scotts/Ortho grub control products) for grub control and this neonic is also effective on a range of ornamental insects. The insect killer will be effective against grubs and surface insects, like chinch bugs and sod webworms.
Ortho Max Flower, Fruit & Vegetable Insect Killer contains acetamiprid, a neonic with some unique abilities to kill caterpillars. This may be a really good option for homeowners to use to control the caterpillars that the other neonics don't kill, like bagworms! This product can also be used on vegetable plants against a pretty wide group of insects.
