April Showers & Baseball Apr 03, 2008
High School Baseball season started this week. Unfortunately, many of the baseball fields have had so much rain they have standing water and subsequent cancelled games. An Ohio State sports turf class (HCS 370) went to one of these high school fields this week to try and get the field "game-ready" for Wednesday. The infield really needed to be re-graded/levelled but with just 24 hours available, the students concentrated their efforts on removing the surface water with hand forks, dressing the infield with calcined clay, raking base paths and re-building the mound. In addition, they seeded and fertilized the turf and painted the school logo at the back of home plate. Here are some "before, during and after" pictures from class: Many Thanks to: Brett Tanner (Columbus Crew), Matt Williams and crew (OSU), Central Farm & Garden (for Profile calcined clay), Frank Dengg, Columbus Public Schools (tools, seed and fertilizer), students from HCS 370, Brian Gimbel, OSU Athletics (mound clay), and Jeremy Froehlich, Athletic Director, Brookhaven High School.
