Unsightly Flower Stalks Jun 20, 2008
Jouvenile perennial ryegrass is trying to flower, leading to unsightly and stalky looking turf. From a distance, the turf looks like it has been mowed with blunt mower blades. Upon closer inspection, the flower (inflorescence) stalks are apparent. The straw-yellow color of the stalks can create some cosmetic problems, particularly if a field event is televised. Doug Gallant at the Cincinnati Reds recently dealt with this on his baseball field and had some issues with the way the field looked under the lights. This phenomenon generally takes place on 1-2 year old perennial ryegrass turf. Once the ryegrass reaches maturity and plants differ in age, this rarely occurs. The "unsightly" turf period lasts around two weeks. Several tips to mask the problem include: * Making sure mower blades are absolutely sharp * Applying some fertilizer + Fe prior to games to add color to the turf * Mowing frequently to remove stalks * Assuring administration, coaches and media personnal that it's just a short hiccup in an otherwise perfect season!
