Ian Gallagher

The 2006-2007 James B Beard Outstanding Senior Award was presented to Ian Gallagher. Ian (pictured with Dr. Dave Gardner and Dr. Karl Danneberger) will graduate in a few short days during Spring Commencement. The award is named in the honor of the preeminent turfgrass scientist of the 20th century.  Dr. Beard grew up on a family farm north of Dayton, Ohio.  He graduated from The Ohio State University/ summa cum laude with a major in agronomy.  Dr. Beard is the most recognized turfgrass researcher in the world and his professional accomplishments are extensive.

The senior who receives this award should exhibit characteristics reflective of Dr. Beard.  These characteristics include strong leadership qualities and integrity, commitment to academics and the turfgrass profession, and willingness to mentor other students (collegiality).  To be considered for this award the student must be nominated by fellow students, faculty or staff.  Besides a strong academic background, Ian has extensive internship experience including an internship at Carton House Golf Club in Ireland during 2006.  Ian was a member of the OSU Turfgrass scholastic team that competed at the 2006-2007 GIS Annual Collegiate Turf Bowl, officer in the OSU Turfgrass Management Club, and has served as mentor and role model for many of the students in the turf program.

Ian received the award from Dr. David Gardner at a “cook-out” last Friday (June 1, last day of class) hosted by students in three turfgrass science classes (HCS 270, HCS 294, and HCS 593).

Ian has accepted an assistant superintendent position at Hyde Park Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio.
