Sports Turf Program Update PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 29 January 2008

Ohio State sports turf students (left with Dr. James Watson - world renowned turfgrass scientist and retired Toro Company agronomist) recently traveled to Phoenix for the national Sports Turf Managers Association Conference to take part in the collegiate quiz bowl and to network with peers and possible future employers.  This is an invaluable trip for the students and one they must make each year as part of their career in the sports turf industry. Their trip was sponsored in part by the Ohio Sports Turf Managers Association and The Ohio Turfgrass Foundation.

Sports Turf Management Online Certificates 1 (Soils & sands for sports), 2 (Sports turf grasses) and 3 (Cultural practices) are now available for turgrass managers to take. These certificates are delivered purely online and consist of audio slide-shows, quizzes and assignments. Certificate 4 (Sports turf pests, diseases, & weeds) and 5 (Synthetic surfaces) are being developed and will be online in the next few weeks. Certificate 6 (IPM & organic programs for sports fields) is in the initial development stage and is set to launch by the end of the year.

The study tour of England is now set for August and September 2008. Turfgrass science, PGM and landscape horticulture students will travel to London and the NW region of England to visit sports facilities, gardens, and golf courses and to learn about issues and management techniques practiced in Europe. More information can be garnished from the Study Abroad Program
