What is the Internship Experience? PDF Print E-mail

  1. What is an internship? - An internship is a short-term work experience in which you receive training and gain experience in a specific field or career area. An internship can be paid or unpaid and can vary in hours and length.

  2. Are all internships paid?
No, all internships are NOT paid. There are many internships that will provide monetary compensation, although payment will vary with employer and industry. On the other hand, there are many valuable and unique opportunities that provide experience outweighing financial compensation.

  3. What is the difference between a summer job and an internship? - A summer job is also a short-term work experience. While the hours and length of the job may vary, you are paid for your work, which may or may not be related to your career interests. It is possible for a "summer job" for one student to be an "internship" for another. To give an example, a student who chooses to work at a television station may do so for enjoyment and to earn money, while another may work to gain experience with production, script writing, audio/video equipment or on-air time. The latter student may be planning to pursue a career in communication, journalism or related field. A summer job can also provide you with a new set of skills that can serve as a building block for future internship opportunities or for future employment.

  4. When is the best time in my college career to have an internship? - While some employers may prefer to hire students who have completed two to three years of college, many employers will consider outstanding first and second year students or actively seek them in hopes of securing an intern for multiple summers.

  5. Can I get credit for my internship? - If you would like to gain credit for your work as an intern, the opportunity to do so can be facilitated by contacting your Academic Advisor or Departmental Advisor. If you have any difficulties please contact the Colleges of Arts and Sciences Career Services Office.

  6. What materials are typically required when applying for an internship? - Many internship employers require only a resume and cover letter for application, however, don't be surprised if an employer requests a list of references, reference letters, a transcript, and/or a writing sample.

  7. Benefits of having an internship
