Student Update

Ohio State sports turf students have exciting times ahead!

Going to the Desert

Next week, eleven turfgrass science majors will be travelling to the 16th Annual Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) Conference in Phoenix Arizona, to take part in the inaugural student quiz bowl. The students have traditionally only gone to the GCSAA Conference in February, but with 26 sports turf students currently in the turf program, the STMA event was a great opportunity for them to meet their peers, interview for internships and attend seminars. The trip is being sponsored by OSU & The Ohio Sports Turf Managers Association , who have also furnished them with OSTMA shirts. Dr. Dave Gardner is taking 19 students to GCSAA in Orlando next month.

Internship Opportunities Abound

Congratulations to Matt Carroll, Wes Applefeller, and Kevin Hartzel who successfully interviewed and will be going to intern at the Boston Red Sox Fenway Park with OSU Alum, Dave Mellor this year. Interviews are still taking place at facilities such as the Columbus Crew Stadium and the Reds Stadium. However, sports turf students are still seeking internship positions so any interested field manager should drop us a line.

Tackling Graduate School

Among the graduating seniors this year are Emily Horner & Erica Titus. Both students are aiming to enter graduate school. Emily may stay at OSU but Erica is investigating all schools with strong sports turf programs.

Joining the Club!

Lastly, congratulations to turfgrass science PhD candidate, Jia Yan, on her recent wedding in China. Jia also graduates this year and will be looking for a position in the field of turfgrass science research.
