Field Research is Ramping Up

By Tyler Carr, Ph.D.

It was an active week at the Ohio Turfgrass Foundation Research and Education Center in Columbus. Brandon Stith’s team core aerified the research greens and fairways with 5/8-inch tines, affecting ~8% of the area. Holes were backfilled with a rootzone sand meeting United States Golf Association particle size specifications.

We will also be evaluating 20 creeping bentgrass cultivars and 1 velvet bentgrass managed as putting green and fairway turf throughout 2024 and 2025. These projects are sponsored by the Alliance for Low-Input Sustainable Turf (A-LIST), so these areas will receive limited amounts of water, fertilizer, and pesticides in effort to identify improved genetics for use on golf courses.
